Building a Quieter Wardrobe

A quiet wardrobe is not a small one. It is a wardrobe where nothing argues — where any two pieces pulled out in the dark will still make sense together.
Start with the palette
Choose three neutrals and hold to them. Oat, camel and charcoal will carry almost anything. Cream, stone and navy will do the same. The restraint is not aesthetic modesty, it is arithmetic — ten pieces in one palette give you far more outfits than fifteen across three.
Buy for the fourth wearing, not the first. Anything that only works once was never really yours.
Weight before colour
Pieces fail together far more often because of weight than because of colour. A fine silk shirt and a heavy wool trouser rarely settle against one another. Keep the weights within reach and the outfit holds without any effort at all.

Ten is enough
A coat, a blazer, two knits, three shirts, two trousers and one dress will cover a year in most lives. The discipline is not in the buying — it is in leaving the gaps unfilled until you are certain what belongs in them.
The measure of a good wardrobe is how little you have to think about it.
