Notes on Natural Linen

Linen is the only cloth we work with that is better in its fifth year than its first. It asks for a little patience at the start, and returns it for a very long time.
A fibre that improves
Flax is stiff when new. The fibre is hollow and strong, and it takes wearing — not washing — to break that structure down into softness. A linen shirt that feels crisp in the shop is doing exactly what it should. The hand you actually want arrives somewhere around the thirtieth wear.
Linen does not wear out so much as wear in. The creases are not a flaw in the cloth, they are the record of it.
Weight and weave
We work mostly in a mid-weight plain weave, heavy enough to hang cleanly from the shoulder and light enough to move with you. Very fine linens drape beautifully and bruise easily. Very heavy ones last forever and never quite soften. The middle is where a shirt can do both.

Living with it
Wash warm, never hot, and take it out of the machine while it is still damp. Hang it on a wide hanger and let gravity do most of the pressing. If you iron, iron it damp and on the reverse — a flattened linen loses the very texture you paid for.
Treated this way, a linen shirt does not really have a season. It simply becomes yours.
